I’ve been waiting for this one. The One You Want by Gena Showalter is a Novella I pre-ordered at the first chance I got. I’ve been reading this author for years and she’s one I even follow on facebook and look forward to seeing on a daily basis. [goodreads review]
Kenna is a young single mom struggling to get by. Her small hometown of Strawberry Valley is full of memories and old drama she tries her best to ignore. When a childhood friend comes back to town to participate in the marriage of his Dad to her Mother… the new drama stirs up some of the old.
Showalter is a great writer, absolutely wonderful and The One You Want is no different. The writing was clear, descriptive, and for a novella perfectly weighted with background and important details. Considering it was a novella, instant love was pretty much a given, it was handled well and the push and pull in the relationship was an alright balance. The romance was offset by a delightful comedy from Kenna and her roommates, their antics creating a break from Kenna’s mother and her uptight perfectionism views.
Kenna’s daughter, North, is adorable and gave the book a heart past the romance. Watching Kenna and her roommates interact with the little one was enjoyable and furthers supported each of the women’s personalities. Just like Kenna’s roommates, Dane’s best friend was barely there and if the book had been a full length novel, maybe he would have had a bigger impact, as it was he felt superfluous.
My main gripe with the story was the love interest. Kenna and Dane’s parents are getting married, making them step-siblings… but they still have a relationship. I know there’s no blood relation there, but that was a block for me that really had me questioning if I wanted to finish the story at all. Was there really no other person this woman could have fallen for?
