![]() Let's talk inspiration: fickle or friend? Every day is different, some days easier than others, but ultimately without inspiration, writing must still go on. I'm not sure how others find their inspiration, but I know that mine over the years has morphed. Sometimes I find inspiration by reading another author's story or by listening to them talk about their work. I can get inspiration from my writing; I can write a short story or edit something I have in progress. Or I can just sit down and stare at things and let them mull over in my brain. Writers are often told, that we cannot wait for inspiration to hit, we must simply write and write and write until we can't help but write more. This advice can work for some, but in practice, it doesn't work for all as it can be more complicated than just sitting down at a computer, notebook, or typewriter and pouring out words onto the page. If I'm looking for inspiration and simply sitting down and starting to write does not work, I have a few books of writing prompts to help me. I also have a book of quotes from other famous and successful authors that is filled with their views on writing which I find very inspiring. But what about you? What do you, the reader of my tiny blog do for inspiration? Some of you are writers. Some of you are readers, and some of you probably have no idea why you're here or how you ended up reading this. That's okay; your input is just as valuable. How do you get inspired before a big game? Or before a scene you have to act out in front of your peers? If you're an artist, do you look at your favorite artist's work before sitting down to do a painting? What about if you're a dancer, do you watch your idols' past performances? Inspiration is unusual, it comes in all shapes and sizes and ultimately varies from person-to-person. In fact, it can also change from day today for each person. Today, my inspiration may be listening to Lindsey Stirling albums or doing writing prompts to get my brain going. Tomorrow may be even more different or wacky or out there. Maybe tomorrow my inspiration will be to take a pole vault class, who knows! Maybe that can lead to a new character that I create after I've gone through that experience. ![]() Because inspiration is different for everyone, we can often learn from each other.
